Silicon nitride ceramic is a high-performance structural ceramic material that has important applications in multiple industrial fields due to its unique combination of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties.

1. Excellent mechanical performance

High hardness: Vickers hardness reaches 1500-1800 HV, second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride.

High strength and toughness: The bending strength is 800-1200 MPa (2-3 times that of alumina), and the fracture toughness is 6-9 MPa · m ¹/² (3 times that of alumina). The interlaced structure formed by β - phase grains can effectively hinder crack propagation.

Low density: 3.2-3.4 g/cm ³ (only 40% of steel), significantly reducing the centrifugal force of high-speed moving parts.

2. Excellent thermal performance

High temperature resistance: Long term use temperature in air is 1200 ℃, short-term tolerance is 1600 ℃

Thermal shock resistance: It can withstand rapid cooling and heating temperature differences of over 800 ℃ without cracking (the critical value of Δ T is much higher than that of zirconia).

Low thermal expansion coefficient: 3.2 × 10 ⁻⁶/K (similar to cast iron), reducing thermal stress.

3. Excellent friction and chemical stability

Self lubrication: The friction coefficient is as low as 0.02-0.08 (close to graphite), and no additional lubrication is required.

Wear resistant and corrosion-resistant: resistant to strong acids (except hydrofluoric acid), strong alkalis, and molten metals (aluminum, zinc, etc.) erosion, with strong oxidation resistance (forming a SiO ₂ protective layer on the surface).

4. Good electrical performance

High insulation: Volume resistivity of 10 ¹⁴ -10 ¹⁶Ω· cm, maintaining insulation ability at high temperatures.

Low dielectric loss: dielectric constant 8-9, suitable for high-frequency electronic devices.

Bearings and seals: ceramic bearing balls (hybrid ceramic bearings), mechanical seal rings, utilizing their self-lubricating, wear-resistant, and lightweight characteristics to extend their lifespan.
